Mixed media (recycled newspaper, oil stain, chalk pastel, glue)
CONTEXTUAL ENVIRONMENT
Dry fauna compliments pops of color against neutral, earth tones
GOAL
Create a desirable product using undesirable / recyclable materials
PROCESS
Rolling lots of newspaper into tubes that can then be rolled and glued into malleable disks
Testing an oil-based coating to simulate the look and feel of African wicker baskets
experimenting with different form factors
Modernizing the design
After sketching some more, I realized that I needed to explore the natural qualities of the newspaper fibers instead of beating them into submission, so I sanded off all of the brown coating to give the pieces more life.
I then experimented with pops of color to compliment the neutral tones.
Experimenting with color
Instead of the green, I wanted to stick to the pinks and earth tones found in the newspaper and the blues that came from the ink.
